Buena Vista
Buena Vista
A view of the Arkansas River in Colorado, looking north just outside of Buena Vista, CO, about 30 miles from the river’s headwaters near Leadville, CO. It’s a very popular river for whitewater rafting in this mountainous area but settles into a calmer, wider river as it flows 1469 miles through Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas on its way to joining the Mississippi River, southeast of Pine Bluff, AR.
The Arkansas formed part of the U.S.—Mexican border between its headwaters near Leadville, CO, to the 100th Meridian, near Dodge City Kansas, from 1821 until the end of the Mexican American War in 1848.
