A view from SE Main Street in Minneapolis, looking southwest across the Mississippi River in the upper region of the St Anthony Falls Historic District. Spanning the river there is the Third Avenue Bridge, first known as the St Anthony Falls Bridge.
The bridge was designed by Minneapolis city engineer, Frederick W. Cappelen, a Norwegian-born engineer and architect who emigrated to the United States in 1880. He also designed the Franklin Avenue Bridge, and died during its construction in 1921. That bridge is officially known as the Cappelen Memorial Bridge, in honor of his work on it.
