The Great Egret, which used to be called Common Egret, Large Egret, Great White Egret, or American Egret, is found in wetlands throughout North America and much of the world. They’re mostly solitary, preying on fish, amphibians, snakes, and small mammals for their main food sources.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, they were hunted for their white feathers and nearly wiped out. Protections then went into effect and populations increased and recovered. But destruction of wetland habitats continues to be an issue for them.
