I first heard the screech and then saw this hawk while hiking a few years ago in Northern Minnesota. By its shape and screechy call, and with the help of a bird book, it was likely a Red Tailed Hawk, and it inspired this woodcut which I finished a few weeks later.

The hawk was gliding in circles between the blue sky and clouds, no doubt watching like a hawk for something to eat on the ground. And according to the bird books, they’re not picky eaters, going for anything from small mammals to insects, birds, reptiles, and even dead birds and animals.

This is a reduction woodcut, carved from one block of Shina wood and printed with oil-based inks on Rives BFK 100% cotton paper.
