River Pines is a scene from the Kettle River in Banning State Park in Northern Minnesota.

This is a two block reduction woodcut printed from two blocks of birch wood. Usually, when I make a two block reduction print, I use one block for warm colors and the other for cool colors. This time it worked out better to use one block for the sky and water, the other for the trees and the rocks underneath them.

It’s called reduction printing because after a block is inked with a color and printed, the portion of the surface of the block that is intended to remain as is on the print is cut away - reduced. The surface of the block is successively cut away similarly with each color printed until the last color for the block has been printed.
