Nicollet Island, just north of St Anthony Falls, lies in the middle of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis and was the site of the first bridge across the Mississippi, opened in 1855.
Before European settlement, it was at times the home of both Ojibwe and Dakota peoples.
The island was named for Joseph Nicolas Nicollet, originally from Cluses in the French Alps region. He was a gifted mathematician, geographer, and astronomer, but became best known as map-maker of the Upper Mississippi region in the 1830s.
This view is from SE Main Street in Minneapolis, on the east bank of the Mississippi looking west toward the 3rd Avenue bridge and downtown Minneapolis.
