Winter on Lake Superior
Winter on Lake Superior
Original woodblock print;
5.25” x 5.25”; Edition of 38
The numbing cold and heavy snows can take their toll on those who live through a north shore winter. Some have even claimed to see penguins out near the lighthouse at the entrance to the Grand Marais harbor.
After 36 hours of nonstop snow plowing, it’s understandable that, as Sam G. drove his plow past the harbor and looked out to the sun rising over the big lake, he might have thought he saw penguins at the lighthouse.
But after getting something to eat and drink, and after a long day and night’s sleep, he realized that what he saw was only seals laying out in the snow.
