The cliffs along the shoreline at Tettegouche SP on Minnesota’s north shore of Lake Superior were formed as a result of the Mid-continent Rift, a geological event that formed Lake Superior and gave rise to these rhyolite rocks - volcanic rocks over a billion years old.

The Tettegouche area was logged for its virign white and Norway pine in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1910, it was sold to Duluth businessmen, the ‘Tettegouche Club’, and was bought and sold several times after that to those concerned with stewardship of the land. In 1979, with the help of the Nature Conservancy, it became a Minnesota State Park.

This woodblock print depicts the large waves of an approaching storm crashing into the ancient cliffs.
